Highlights from the Report Card on Ontario's Elementary Schools

• Among the 65 countries/economies and 10 Canadian provinces that participated in the 2009 PISA international testing, Ontario ranked 6th in combined reading; 10th in science; and 14th in mathematics.
• Of the 2,327 schools in this Report Card for which there were five years of data, 18 Catholic schools, 22 public schools and two private schools enjoyed five-year-average ratings of 9.0 or higher.
• Of the 2,327 schools in this Report Card for which there were five years of data, 144 enjoyed statistically significant improvement over the past five years. During the same period, 201 schools showed statistically significant decline.
• Among schools with average parental income in the bottom quartile, 174 schools (31% of total) enjoyed average five year ratings at or above average.

Highlights from the Report Card on Ontario's Secondary Schools

• Among the 57 countries and 10 Canadian provinces that participated in the 2006 PISA international testing, Ontario ranked 5th in overall science results; 5th in reading; and 10th in mathematics.
• Of the Catholic and public schools for which there were 5 years of data, the Overall average rating out of 10 during the last five years was 6.5 for Catholic schools and only 6.1 for public schools.
• Of the 75 schools in this Report Card that enjoyed statistically significant improvement over the past five years, 19 where schools in which more than 20% of the students had identified special needs.
• Among the 174 schools with average parental income in the bottom quartile, 41 schools (24% of total) enjoyed above average five-year Overall ratings.
